glass brick

Related terms: glass block

A window opening filled with glass masonry units mortared together, usually admitting light while obscuring clear views.

A glass brick window is a window opening (as opposed to a continuous facade) filled with glass masonry units mortared together like bricks. Each glass brick is generally very thick, usually around 10 centimeters, and in most cases they allow light to pass through but contain distortions which block visibility. They are commonly used in bathrooms and hallways.

The glass units fill a defined window opening. A continuous glass-brick facade is outside this window-type definition.

Thickness and optical distortion are usual characteristics, not exact minimum requirements. The units are joined as masonry instead of being a single picture-window pane.
