gold mine

A mine extracting natural gold deposits from the earth, including both open-pit and underground workings.

A gold mine is a site for the extraction of natural deposits of gold from the earth. Gold is a lustrous yellowish precious metal and a chemical element with atomic number 79. Because of its rarity and preciousness it is used as a store of monetary value as well as in jewelry and industrial applications.

Gold mines can be either open-pit or underground.

The mining use concerns recovery from a natural deposit. Jewelry production, trading, or storage of refined gold alone does not establish a gold mine.
