ferry terminal

A station for scheduled ferries carrying passengers, cargo, or vehicles across a body of water.

A ferry terminal is a station area for ferry boats of any kind, which carry persons, cargo, cars, trucks, trains, or other vehicles across a body of water on a regularly scheduled route. These normally exist at important water-crossing routes which lack a bridge or tunnel for any reason, including places where the water is too wide to construct a bridge or tunnel.

The regularly scheduled water crossing defines the ferry service. The carried traffic can include rail vehicles as well as pedestrians and road vehicles.

The absence of a bridge or tunnel is a common reason for the route, but is not a requirement. Other passenger-ship boarding facilities belong to passenger port terminals.
