number of chimneys

The total quantity of emissions shafts protruding vertically from a structure.

The number of chimneys on a structure is the total quantity of emissions shafts for smoke or steam rising above the roof, cornice, setback, or other upper level of the structure. Major smokestacks, domestic chimneys, and metal pipes serving the same function are all counted as chimneys in this data field.

The shafts carry smoke or steam above an upper level of the structure. Their scale does not determine inclusion: the stated scope covers domestic chimneys and major smokestacks as well as metal pipes performing that function.

The quantity describes the emissions shafts, rather than the number of appliances or processes they serve. Chimney height and shaft dimensions are separate measurements.
