NZ region code
The two-digit code identifying a New Zealand region in the statistical standard for geographic areas kept by Stats NZ.
Regions are the top tier of New Zealand's geographic standard. Sixteen are covered by a regional council, five of which are administered by unitary authorities that also act as territorial authorities.
Two digits, and the leading zero is part of the code: Northland is 01, Auckland 02, Wellington 09. The sequence skips 10 and 11, running from 09 straight to 12 West Coast. Stored as a number rather than text, 02 becomes 2 and no longer matches the register.
Chatham Islands Territory has no regional council. Stats NZ places it in 99, Area Outside Region, which is a catch-all rather than a code for the islands.
