granite quarry

A site extracting naturally occurring granite from the earth on a large scale, usually as blocks or slabs.

A granite quarry is a place where naturally occurring granite, a coarse-grained igneous rock with many ornamental and architectural uses, is extracted from the earth on a large scale. Quarried granite is generally extracted in the form of large sheets or blocks.

Granite is removed from its natural deposit. The usual block or sheet form supplies material for later architectural and ornamental working.

A stone-cutting workshop can process the quarry's output without itself being a quarry. The defining activity is large-scale extraction of the granite.
