rental cost

The price charged to tenants per measured square unit to rent space in a structure.

The rental cost per square unit is a measurement designed to compare value between available spaces. It may be applied to any usage where space is leased or rented to tenants by the owner. It does not directly reflect the rental cost per occupation unit. It is normally expressed in currency per square meter or per square foot.

The area denominator allows spaces of different sizes to be compared on a common basis. A total rent for one occupation unit is a different amount from the rental cost per square meter or square foot.

The currency and area unit are part of the rate. The measure can apply to any leased use and is not confined to a particular kind of tenant space.
