angular helix stairway

A stairway following an angular polygonal path around a central core, shaft, open space, or atrium.

An angular helical stairway consists of steps arranged in multiple flights, usually of a few steps each, forming an angled polygon (usually a quadrilateral or triangle) around a central core, shaft, large space, or atrium. It is basically similar to a helical stairway except that it makes several angular turns, often at right angles, instead of a more continuous curved loop. This type also cannot be as narrow as the narrowest helical stairways.

Angular helices may complete a loop around their axis either between successive floors, or over the course of multiple floors without any turns at all between levels. This type of staircase may feature either landings or winders at the points where it turns.

The circuit can be completed within one floor interval or across several floors. Landings and winders are both permitted at the turns, while the polygonal route distinguishes it from a curved helix.
