Australian suburb code

The five-digit ASGS identifier for an Australian Suburb and Locality, a statistical approximation of a named locality.

Suburbs and Localities are ABS statistical approximations of officially recognized suburb and locality boundaries. ASGS Edition 3 lists 15,353, including special-purpose codes; the approximations are not the legal boundaries themselves.

Five digits: the state or territory digit followed by a four-digit identifier starting at 0001. Abbotsford in New South Wales is 10003.

Some rural areas and islands lack officially defined locality boundaries. In ASGS Edition 3, remainder areas and allocation to nearby localities provide statistical coverage rather than leaving those places without a Suburb and Locality code.
