A rug store is a retail space specializing in the sale of rugs. As opposed to carpets, rugs are sold as single pieces which are to be laid loosely on the floor, without any kind of bonding or permanent attachment. Rug stores commonly specialize in Oriental rugs, mainly in styles from central and western Asia.

A rug is laid as a loose piece. Carpet stores instead specialize in continuous coverings bonded to the floor.

Oriental rugs are a common specialization but are not mandatory. The loose, single-piece form remains the defining product distinction.
