vermiculite loose fill

Loose expanded particles of vermiculite mineral used as thermal insulation in building spaces.

Vermiculite loose fill is an insulation material composed of particles of vermiculite, a naturally occurring silicate mineral containing magnesium, aluminum, and iron. The mineral expands with heat, and has a comparatively low insulation rating. It is gray or brown in color. Some vermiculite ore has been contaminated with asbestos from the same geological deposits.

The expanded particles provide the loose-fill form. Vermiculite is a mineral material, distinct from glass fibers or plant-fiber insulation.

Some vermiculite deposits contain asbestos, and some older vermiculite insulation was made from contaminated ore. The composition of an installed product cannot be established from the vermiculite name alone.
