The number of hoist elevators used on a structure is the total number of temporary elevators mounted on the framework for use in building that structure during its construction phase. This includes hoists mounted on the exterior, in atriums, or on interior shafts. It does not include regular elevators or cabs riding permanent elevator machinery, and it does not include hoists installed for renovation or demolition.

Besides being mounted temporarily on the side of a structure, hoists differ from elevators in being extensible: as the structure rises, the hoist too is extended vertically.

The count concerns temporary construction hoists throughout the building phase. Their location outside, within an atrium, or along an interior shaft does not change that temporary construction role.
