hill size

The size category of a ski jumping hill, measured from the take-off point to the end of the landing area.

Hill size is the standard measure of a ski jumping hill. It runs from the take-off in a straight line to the knoll and then along the landing slope to the hill-size point. It replaced the K-point as the primary figure in 2004.

The classes follow from it. A normal hill is HS85 to HS109 and a large hill HS110 to HS184. Anything above HS185 is a ski flying hill, and five of those exist in the world.

The K-point is a different number and sits slightly higher up the slope, where it sets the distance scoring. A hill quoted by K-point and by hill size gives two figures that are both right.
