salt therapy

A place where people expose themselves to salt mists, sprays, or salinated air for health benefits.

A salt therapy room is a space where people sit in air carrying salt mist or dry salt aerosol, usually for respiratory complaints. The practice is also called halotherapy.

The idea came out of salt mines. The Polish physician Feliks Boczkowski noted in 1843 that miners suffered fewer lung complaints than other workers, and treatment centers opened across Eastern Europe from the 1950s.

A 2014 review of halotherapy for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease retrieved 151 articles, but only one randomized controlled trial met its inclusion criteria. The authors found insufficient evidence to recommend the treatment for that condition.
