railyard

An open-air site with many parallel railroad tracks for storing and sorting rail cars.

A railyard is an open-air site where several connected branches or spurs of railroad tracks are arranged together, usually parallel to each other, for the storage and/or sorting of rail cars.

The connected tracks provide space to hold or sort railcars. Their usual parallel arrangement can be linked through branches or spurs.

Storage and sorting can occur together or separately. The open-air rail-handling site is distinct from a passenger station whose primary purpose is boarding.
