Canadian CSDUID
The seven-digit code identifying a Canadian census subdivision in the Standard Geographical Classification kept by Statistics Canada.
A census subdivision is a municipality as defined by provincial or territorial law, or an area treated as a municipal equivalent for statistics. The 2021 classification lists 5,161 of them, of which 992 are Indian reserves.
Seven digits: two for the province or territory, two for the census division, three for the subdivision. 105 Mile Post 2 in British Columbia is 5933845, where 59 is British Columbia and 33 the Cariboo census division.
The code is tied to its edition and is not a permanent key. Statistics Canada states that several hundred subdivisions change every five years, and that a code may be reused once at least two editions have passed since it was last used, so a code deleted in 2006 may name a different municipality from 2021. A value is only unambiguous alongside the edition it came from.
