Recreation areas are places designated for relaxing or rejuvenating activities, where people can spend time without a strict program. This includes various forms of play areas and sites for rest and relaxation. It does not include sports areas, although the designated activities within them may be considered exercise (recreation areas very often co-exist with sports usages).

The space supports activity without a strict program, including informal play or rest. Physical movement can be involved without making the area a designated sports facility.

Recreation and sports areas can exist together at one site. A court assigned to a sport and a neighboring area for casual relaxation retain different uses.
