smoke exhaust system

Ducts or other outlets designed to carry smoke or cooking fumes out of a building.

A smoke exhaust system is an active or passive ventilation system designed especially to conduct smoke, grease-laden vapors, or other harmful gases out of a building.

Smoke exhaust can use natural airflow or powered extraction. Natural smoke ventilation uses the movement of hot smoke through outlets, while mechanical extraction uses powered equipment to move it. Openable vents can be operated through emergency controls or automatic detection; automatic opening does not itself mean that a fan moves the smoke.

The defining function is removal of smoke, grease-laden vapor, or harmful gases from the building. A window opener can operate an outlet, but opening a window alone does not establish a system designed for that exhaust function.
