A core plus outrigger framing system is an engineering solution used in several tall buildings, in which a strong central core is connected at intervals to the building's perimeter by very strong rigid beams (usually steel or steel-reinforced concrete). The outriggers in a building form a rigid bond between the main structural support (the core) and a balancing structural element (the perimeter columns).
This system is a useful method of creating open floor plans in a very tall building, which might otherwise require columns between the core and perimeter. The outriggers must be far sturdier than a typical post-and-beam rigid frame, and tie the frame together more solidly than normal floorplate connections would by themselves.
The outriggers provide strong structural links between the core and perimeter columns at selected levels. Ordinary floor connections alone are insufficient; the dedicated beams must tie those resisting elements together.
