rose window

A large circular window with tracery, placed in the center of a facade over the entrance.

A rose window is a large circular window divided into smaller panes, usually by elaborate geometrical tracery, which is placed in the center of a main facade directly over the entrance, on an axis with the interior space. It is a common feature of churches, and is usually filled with stained glass.

Its location forms part of the definition: centered on the main facade, directly above the entrance, and aligned with the interior. A circular window elsewhere does not establish this particular feature.

The window is divided into smaller panes. Elaborate tracery and stained glass are usual treatments, while a church setting is common rather than mandatory.
