block-focused numbering

A house-numbering system in which numbers relate to identified blocks or land parcels rather than streets.

Block-focused numbering refers to any system in which house numbers are tied to blocks or land parcels, and not to streets or linear features. When this system is used, each block generally has its own identity (name or number), and very often the streets between them are unnamed.

This system is common in Japan and in South Korea, and also appears in exceptional places such as Mannheim, Germany.

The block or parcel provides the geographic reference for the number. Its identity is therefore central to locating the property, even where nearby streets have no names.
