sandstone quarry

A site where sedimentary rock of compacted sand is extracted from the earth in large blocks.

A sandstone quarry is a place where large blocks of naturally occurring sedimentary rock are cut from the earth, mainly for use in construction. Sandstone is a common material for facades and structural masonry. It is a durable rock but relatively easy to cut. It is often favored for aesthetic reasons because of its color and texture.

The quarry extracts sandstone as large blocks. The naturally cemented sand grains form a solid sedimentary rock, distinct from the loose material removed at a sand quarry.

The use concerns extraction from the earth. A workshop that cuts or finishes sandstone delivered from another site has a different primary activity.
