What is a standard?
A standard is a structured code for expressing the meaning of an information asset.
Standards are highly structured, unique and linked definitions that provide certainty about the meaning of information assets or their properties. A standard is always connected to parent or child standards and never stands alone. Its meaning should not overlap with other existing standards. These standards enable a common understanding, supported by a wide range of users, and encourage sharing, evaluation, and comparison of information.
The standards create a static framework for a broad understanding. This standardization framework has expanded and evolved over time. It is supplemented by compounds to cover meaning, interpretation and evolution that standards alone cannot deliver. These derivatives are currently under development, along with processes that will allow POI derivatization.
The creation and management of standards is limited to senior managers and strategic editors at the highest competency level within SKYDB Definitions.
Each released standard gets its own 10-digit SDC number.
