201 Tower: 2011 Winner

The SKYDB Awards recognize high-rise buildings that unite architectural quality with practical performance, and 201 Tower, also known as Sama Tower, in Dubai was selected as the 2011 SKYDB Awards Winner.

The 194-meter mixed-use building begins with a trapezoidal floor plate that gradually reverses its orientation as it rises. This controlled shift produces a twisting profile without relying on applied decoration. Retail and offices occupy the lower part of the complex, with 376 apartments arranged through the upper levels.

The changing geometry opens different views toward Sheikh Zayed Road and the coast while giving the elevations a distinct direction on each side. Repeated horizontal bands keep the rotation readable and provide a common scale across the facade. The award recognizes a tower that gives a large residential program a strong profile through a measured change in its floor plan.
