A ball field is a medium-sized to large field, usually of grass but sometimes dirt or sand, configured for ball games such as soccer, football, cricket, baseball, lacrosse, rugby, etc. The field generally has defined boundaries and markings.

The land is configured for field sports, commonly with marked playing boundaries. Grass is usual, while dirt or sand can also provide the playing surface.

A ball court has the constructed-court form used by different games. Surface material alone does not settle the distinction, because a court can also be grass.
