damaged by explosion

An explosion of accidental or unknown causes damages a structure partly or completely.

A structure is damaged by an explosion when a sudden, explosive chemical reaction or massive sudden incendiary event, either of accidental origin or from unknown causes, damages all or part of a built object in a fashion not determined by the owner's deliberate program of demolition. Explosions can be caused by flammable substances such as natural gas, by stored materials such as fertilizer or petroleum, or by volatile chemicals.

If the explosion is produced by a deliberately constructed bomb, or by an act of terrorism, warfare, criminality, vengeance, or vandalism, then the event should be classified as damaged by bombing.

The event excludes the owner's planned demolition. A known bomb remains within damage by bombing even if its detonation is accidental; this definition covers the other accidental explosions and explosions whose causes are unknown.
