antenna

A protruding structure used for the reception or transmission of electromagnetic waves.

An antenna is a structure used for sending or receiving electromagnetic data. It can be an independent tower or attached to another structure. Antennas (sometimes spelled 'antennae') are usually tall, narrow poles, but they can also be open frameworks.

The structure serves transmission or reception rather than merely providing an upright support. A pole-like form and an open framework can both carry that function.

An attached antenna can extend above a building's architectural summit and supply its tip element. An independent antenna tower has its own structural identity.
