multi-level porch

A series of outdoor platforms attached to a building and connected vertically by stairs.

A multi-level porch is a series of porches or unenclosed platforms attached to a building, most often on the back or side facade, and connected by a stairway which is often intended as a fire escape.

Multi-level porches may be built primarily for safety, often in compliance with building codes that require alternate exit pathways from upper-level apartments. However they are often used like balconies or true porches as extensions of living space, e.g. for outdoor cooking.

The stair connection joins outdoor platforms at several levels. A set of separate balconies without that connection lacks this arrangement; use of the platforms as a fire escape or living space can vary.
