ISO 3166-2 code
The code for a country subdivision in part 2 of the ISO 3166 standard: the country code, a hyphen, and up to three more characters.
An ISO 3166-2 code names a state, province or region inside a country. It is built from the country’s ISO 3166-1 code, a hyphen, and up to three further characters. RU-KDA is Krasnodar Krai, NO-46 is Vestland.
The code identifies the subdivision, not the country. A country carries an ISO 3166-1 code instead, which SKYDB keeps in a separate field, so the two are never stored in the same place.
Part 2 can cover more than one administrative tier within a country. National registers also supply their own codes: France uses the INSEE code, Norway the municipality number, Russia the OKTMO code.
