coordinates

Geographic position expressed through latitude, longitude, and altitude relative to their reference surfaces and lines.

Coordinates, or geocoordinates, are numerical values identifying the geographic position of a point on earth. The three numbers of any coordinate (altitude, latitude, and longitude) are measured with respect to sea level, the equator, and the Greenwich Line.

Latitude and longitude give angular position; altitude gives height relative to the sea-level reference used here. They are not three interchangeable distances from the earth's center.

A pinpoint location is one representative position for an object. A boundary uses multiple coordinate positions to describe an outline, while a map's zoom level controls the viewing scale.
