entrance approach

The basic form in which a pedestrian main entrance of a building is reached from outside.

The entrance approach to any built object describes the accessibility and form of approach for any pedestrian main entrance to that object. This field plays a major role in determining the handicapped accessibility of a building or structure.

An approach type is applicable for the entire approach path between the public right-of-way (or, lacking that, any comparable limitation to the building grounds, such as a property line) and the entrance itself. Therefore, a stairway or ramp would count whether it is right at the entrance or a long distance away on the same property.

Multiple entrance approach types may be selected if the approaches to 2 or more main entrances differ, or if one main entrance has multiple types of approach (e.g. a ramp and stairs).
