cellulose spray

A mass of fine particulate plant fiber sprayed into wall and roof cavities for thermal insulation.

Cellulose spray is a mass of organic plant fiber (C₆H₁₀O₅)ₙ combined with water and commonly treated with fire retardants. It is applied to spaces in walls and roofs as a wet spray, which must be dried before being completely covered. Its installed density and moisture condition affect thermal performance. The fibers are usually derived from recycled materials including paper products.

The plant-fiber material is applied with moisture so that it adheres within the wall or roof space. It must dry before the construction is closed over it.

This wet-applied form is distinct from cellulose loose fill installed dry. Recycled paper is a common source of the fiber.
