sawdust

A floor or ground surface covered by very fine, powder-like wood particles, usually from sawing or planing.

A sawdust flooring surface is a ground or floor area with an upper layer of very fine, powder-like wood particles, usually created as a by-product of sawing or planing wood. It is a very inexpensive, easily replaceable, and biodegradable surface that is comfortable to walk on. However it is highly flammable and gets soggy easily when wet.

Sawdust particles are smaller than wood chips, but are found in many of the same areas like recreation sites, farms, landscaped areas, and places intended for animals.

The fine particles form the surface layer used for walking or other activities. Their smaller size distinguishes them from a wood-chip surface.
