Mannerism was a transitional phase between Renaissance and Baroque architecture. It began as an evolution away from the conservative classicism and orderliness of the Renaissance, experimenting with new arrangements of classical forms.

Mannerism introduced architecture as a theatrical element in buildings, using devices such as broken pediments, paired pilasters, and false doors.
