Extraction can recover solid material or a fossil fuel through a well. Extraction therefore occurs at an oil extraction site as well as at a mineral mine.

The resource is taken from the earth. Growing a living crop belongs to cultivation, while subsequent fabrication of a product is a different industrial activity.
