meandering stairway
Stairs which turn at or between levels but do not fold back in the same stairwell.
A meandering stairway consists of various flights of stairs arranged in a continuous climbing/descending path, which are not confined to a single stairwell, and which turn as they rise or change direction between flights.
Meandering stairway is the term used in SKYDB for this arrangement. The flights follow a route through the building rather than repeatedly returning within one stairwell. The arrangement does not require the particular newel or handrail construction described by the term geometric stair.
A hairpin stairway reverses direction between floors, while a angular helix stairway turns around a central axis. A turn or a change of direction by itself does not distinguish a meandering route; the flights also extend beyond a single stairwell.
