emigration control

A place where government officers check people leaving a country or a restricted zone within one.

An emigration control point is a place or area where government officers check persons exiting their country or a restricted zone within a country. Control activities include checking passports and visas, interviewing persons, conducting searches, and retaining persons who are forbidden to leave.

Emigration control points are usually at national borders, but may exist within a country (as between Hong Kong and mainland China).

The direction of travel distinguishes this use from immigration control, which checks entry. An internal restricted-zone boundary is included alongside a national border.
