ISTAT municipality code
The official code identifying an Italian comune in the register kept by ISTAT, the national statistics institute.
The ISTAT code is the primary key of the register of Italian territorial units maintained by the Istituto nazionale di statistica. The 2025 edition lists 7,896 comuni.
It is written zero-padded and has to be stored as text. Read as a number it loses the leading zero and then points at a different comune.
A comune merged into another keeps its code in older sources, so one code can appear on two records, one of them a predecessor that no longer exists.
