employment bureau

A government office providing or administering services to job seekers or the unemployed.

An employment bureau is a government office where services for unemployed persons, or for persons seeking work, are administered. This can be a "behind-the-scenes" management office for such services, or a public facility where staff interface with recipients of those services.

This should not be confused with an employment agency, which is a non-governmental office that connects workers to jobs, usually for a commission.

Both program administration and direct assistance to people seeking work are included. An office does not have to receive job seekers in person to qualify, and a charitable employment agency remains separate when it is not a government office.
