wedding cake form

A building shape with multiple receding setbacks at different sides and levels.

A wedding cake form is a building shape with a multiplicity of setbacks, usually on different sides and at different levels. The setbacks are rarely used as terraces, partly because most examples are commercial office buildings.

This form is very common in New York City but uncommon elsewhere, as it arose in response to the particular demands of a zoning code in the middle decades of the 20th century aimed at preventing loss of sunlight on the streets.

Wedding cake buildings can have any of several architectural styles. In the 1920s they often used revival styles or art deco (continuing into the 30s), while later buildings into the 1960s were often modern, early modern, or international style.

This does not refer to the shapes of Soviet classicist buildings, which are also called "wedding cakes" sometimes, but are not related to this form.
