Australian state code
The one-digit ASGS identifier for an Australian state or territory, including the grouped Other Territories category.
The Australian Statistical Geography Standard is the framework the Australian Bureau of Statistics uses for every geographic unit it publishes. The state and territory codes sit at its top level.
One digit: 1 New South Wales, 2 Victoria, 3 Queensland, 4 South Australia, 5 Western Australia, 6 Tasmania, 7 Northern Territory, 8 Australian Capital Territory.
Code 9, Other Territories, is the one that needs care. It is a single grouped category holding Jervis Bay, Christmas Island, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Norfolk Island together, so it identifies none of them on its own. Christmas Island and the Cocos Islands are administered as Western Australian local government areas, and their five-digit codes belong in the Australian LGA code, not here.
