Elevator replacement in a structure begins when the removal of at least one elevator commences in preparation for its replacement. It does not necessarily involve the replacement of all elevators in the structure, but it must involve at least one whole cab and the machines which move it. Renovation of an existing elevator cab is not included in this event type.
The replacement must include at least one complete cab and its moving machinery. Work can involve only part of the building's elevator installation.
Refurbishing a retained cab is excluded. Elevator replacement ends when the last replacement elevator becomes operational, so beginning removal and completing the installation are distinct events.
