roof covering
The substance and layout of the material used to cover the upper surface of a building.
The roof covering is the material and format used on the outer, sky-facing layer of a building's roof. It may be structural in itself, but is usually applied over the roof framework. Roof coverings normally have greater value when they are waterproof, windproof, durable, light, strong, insulating, and non-toxic.
The covering occupies the outward, sky-facing roof surface. It can carry structural loads itself or be supported by a separate framework.
Roof frame material describes the supporting construction beneath the covering. Roof form describes shape, which can remain the same when the covering material changes.
