shingles

A facade of many small, thin, flat pieces arranged so that upper pieces overlap the pieces below.

A shingle facade consists of many individual small pieces cut into thin, flat shapes, arranged so that the higher pieces overlap the lower ones. The most common materials used for shingles are wood, slate, ceramic, asphalt, and asbestos. Certain metals are also sometimes installed as shingles.

The pieces are separate small units. Weatherboarding uses horizontal boards or slats, while slat facades fit strips together without overlap.

Different materials can use the shingle arrangement. The system describes the form and overlap of the units, not a single required cladding material.
