beach volleyball
A soft-sand court for beach volleyball, with two-player teams competing across a net.
Beach volleyball is an Olympic sport similar to regular or indoor volleyball but using a soft sand playing surface, teams of two players, different scoring, and different rules concerning touches and blocking.
The soft sand is the playing surface, and the teams have two players. Those characteristics distinguish the game from the six-player volleyball described in the neighboring definition.
The playing site need not be a natural beach simply because the sport has beach in its name. The defining provision is a sand court set up for the beach-volleyball game, rather than a general sandy area without the court arrangement.
