mosaic

Flooring composed of many small pieces of colored stone in a decorative pattern.

A mosaic floor is a floor covered with many tiny pieces of stone, usually about one square centimeter each, which are bonded to the subfloor, and arranged in a decorative or artistic pattern. The pieces may or may not be grouted or glazed.

Mosaic floors are most common in public spaces (such as museums and libraries) and in lobbies.

The small stone pieces are individually arranged and bonded into the pattern. This differs from terrazzo, whose chips are mixed into a poured resin mass. Grout and glaze remain optional.
