non-geographic numbering

Non-geographic numbering refers to systems of house numbering in which the numeric sequence is not based on geographic order. In such cases the order may be random or happenstance, or may be based on the order of construction or development.

Adjacent numbers need not identify neighboring properties. The numbering sequence can instead reflect when properties were built or developed, or have no systematic ordering principle.

The absence of geographic sequence concerns the relationship between the numbers and property locations. It is distinct from the address format, which governs the written order of address components.
