Measurements are quantitative descriptions of an object expressed in standard units (especially metric or imperial units), as opposed to quantities which are tallies of discrete units. When competing standards exist for a particular measurement, the alternative standards can be listed side-by-side with specific names to distinguish them.
The number expresses a measured property together with its unit. A dimension stated in meters and a number of individual components are different kinds of quantity.
Different standards can define different versions of a measurement. Their explicit names preserve the distinction, so an alternative standard need not be treated as an error in the measured object.
