doorman

A regularly posted employee at a building entrance who attends to or oversees people entering.

A building is listed as having a doorman whenever there is any regularly posted employee present at the entrance who oversees or tends to persons entering the building. This may be a security guard, a service attendant, or both; the employee is not necessarily someone standing at the door to open it.

The employee is regularly present at the entrance to tend to or oversee arrivals. Security and service are both included functions, so opening the door by hand is not required.

An elevator operator controls an elevator for its riders. The doorman's defining position is at the building entrance, rather than inside an elevator cabin.
