Gaelic football and hurling are team sports popular in Ireland in which the goal is to get the ball between the posts of an H-shaped goal. Scores can be made above the crossbar or below it into the netted goal; the point value depends on the game and the type of score. The field is large and grassy, 130-145 meters long and 80-90 meters wide.

In Gaelic football the ball is similar to a volleyball, and is advanced by direct handling, usually kicking, carrying, and passing. In hurling players use a much smaller ball, which may be advanced with a hurley (a stick with a flat hitting surface at the end), or by slapping, kicking, or carrying it up to four steps.

Both games use the large rectangular field and H-shaped scoring spaces, but the ball and handling equipment differ. A soccer goal does not provide the same above-crossbar scoring space. Gaelic football also has qualifying two-point kicks under current GAA rules, so over-the-bar scoring is not universally worth one point.
